TIM TONIGHT!

In case y'all are wonderin' what to do with yourselves this evening...

Miss Vero suggests y'all make it to see Tim tonight. That's Tim Dorsey kids, Miss Vero's favorite Florida author. Mr. Dorsey will be at the Vero Beach Book Center to tell y'all about his new book, we love us some "Serge" so y'all know we'll be there!

Or catch up with SERGE!

And if for some reason y'all can't make it, there's an Amazon book thingy on the right and y'all can go ahead and buy a book with that. Convenient, huh?

Now Hunnies, Miss Vero just got back from yet another trip, so let us unpack and we'll be back a little later to tell y'all about it.

TASTY THURSDAY TREATS

It's a big ole buffet of info today, so get y'all a biscuit to sop up the pot liquor we'll be servin.

FABULOUS FLORIDA!

This weekend, the finest of all things Florida will be in Gulfport, over there in the Tampa area, where the 2009 Floridiana Festival will be swingin at the Gulfport Casino. Perfect road trip excuse!
http://www.hulahula.biz/2009floridianafestival.html

WE TRY TO BEHAVE,
BUT HE HE KEEPS ENCOURAGING US!

And speakin of Florida road trippin, y'all know we ventured out Tuesday night to see the fabulous Mr. Tim Dorsey (look at how happy he was to see us!), at the Vero Beach book Center and picked up his new book "Nuclear Jellyfish", which we have already finished reading! We believe this one might just be our favorite, but then again, we say that every time we get our little paws on somethin Serge.
http://www.timdorsey.com/home.html

ARE THE DODGERS CURSED?

Oh no! Say it isn't so. Vero Beach's own Mr. Sandy Kofax taken in by that crazy Madoff money man!

GOOD OLE BOYS, CHEWIN AND A CHATTIN

As possibly promised, we listened to Charlie Wilson on Rhett Palmer's radio program, Monday (the rebroadcast hunnies, because y'all know we don't rise from our beauty sleep till the crack of noon). And we were particularly feeling sorry for Mr. Wilson who couldn't get a word in edgewise between Rhett's crazy country singin and County Commissioner Gary Wheeler, so to be real nice to Mr. Wilson for all his sufferin, we thought we'd give y'all a link to his new website:

Let's just hope that he updates it more frequently than Rhett's "readers forum" who forever keeps asking us to "check back in a few days" or the TV10 website, which is still "under construction".

Oh! We did hear a little rumor about that, it seems that the host PDMNET is holding the station owner hostage and won't release the domain name. We also hear that the same principle for this company (PDMNET) is responsible for the $600,000 wireless system(600THOUSAND?! Can that be right?) that is not working properly at the Indian River Medical Center (like they need another problem). Can any of y'all shed more light on this big ole stinkin pile of rumor and gossip? And that's just the tip of the pile kids, y'all wouldn't believe the volume of hospital rumblings stuffin our mail box concerning the goings on at that hospital. Pity.

WE THINK WE'RE HALUH-CIN-ATIN!
Can it be true? Did a beachie charity event really look this good? Y'all won't believe how beautiful the Whiney Festival was photographed:
A big MWAH! and special thank you to the always fabulous Die Muse of our World for sending us such a lovely gift!

ARE THEY TRYING TO TELL US SOMETHIN?
Some of Miss Vero's friends are suggesting we try a "Zumba" class that apparently is all the rage (and offered right here in Vero!) As y'all know, we have tried to exercise in the past but have never actually gotten past the initial planning phase. Maybe this time will be different. Yeah, maybe.

SINGLE? DATING? IN VERO?
We offer our sincere condolences. Now if any of y'all would like to share those experiences with Miss Vero and all the Beach House readers, we will be featuring a new writer on the dating scene tomorrow and hopefully every Friday, but we're sure she'll run out of material fast, so that's why we're asking, no begging, for y'all's help. So jot somethin down and send it right now! (It's not like you're super busy getting ready for a date or anything, might as well commiserate).

A big Thank Y'all to everyone who faithfully visits the Beach House and sends gifts of gossip!

Did we tell y'all how much we loves our Mr. Tim Dorsey, did we, huh? Did we?
Oh my goodness, we are fanning ourselves as we type!

Well, truth be told, it's really not about Mr. Dorsey, it's all Serge. Oh hunnies how can Miss Vero ever express the the feelings we have for our beloved Serge? It all happened one... long... cocktailin... weekend that lasted thirty seven days and let's just say that Miss Vero is proud to be one of the only admirers alive that can actually vaguely remember the unbelievable and fabulous time spent with Serge! Or maybe it was Coleman? Oh well it was a long time ago and it was dark and ...

Just get the book!

Ohhh, here's Serge's blog, maybe he mentioned Miss Vero, we can only hope!

ROAD TRIP AND MORE!

Ahhright hunnies, get out your calendars or your i-somethings or your chisel and hammer or whatever it is y'all use to save the date, here's some good times in the next few weeks to look forward to and although we love Fellsmere, that ole frog leg festival that Max was talking about yesterday, just isn't anywhere on our list.

Miss Vero is tired of everyone telling us that they are bored to tears with the same ole stuff (yet, we completely understand), so we've come up with a few suggestions that y'all might not see anywhere else. Of course we'll be attending most of the events (or sendin a designated socialite) and disscussin 'em all at length when they happen, so just consider this a sneak peek into our social calendar.

First of all, don't forget the Indian River Taxpayer's luncheon tomorrow, where the guest speaker will be Mr. Jeff Susi, CEO of the Indian River Medical Center. We're sure he'll be thrilled to see y'all and answer any question y'all may have.

At a dinner party last weekend, Miss Vero listened eagerly to the story of a very well to do beachie woman, who upon entering the ER informed the staff that she was a member of the "Golden Eagles" and should be whisked away to her private accommodations immediately! The attending RN (who related the tale), explained quite patiently that she would have to wait in the same designated area as everyone else and that it didn't matter how much money she gave to who, because no matter what she was told, this was indeed a myth to perpetuate donor dollars. Needless to say, Miss beachie's subsequent attitude was not helpful in the healing process.

So don't forget, go and see Mr. Susi squirm, uhmm, speak tomorrow.

And while you're in the mood, why not attend the appropriately named "Breaking Legs" at The Riverside Theater, opening tomorrow night?

Also, y'all might want to consider seeing Mr. Garrison Keillor, who will be visiting next Monday, January 19th, but if y'all have made plans for celebratin the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Day, once again, we completely understand.

In fact, next week we should all be celebratin the inauguration of our new President, Mr. Barack Obama. Can we get a hoooray and an amen and a hallelujah?!!! Yes indeed. There will be a party, of course! Tuesday night, January 20th at the Epicenter of Cool, Undertow, to watch and celebrate this historic event.

Miss Nancy Richards, of the Indian River county Democratic Party, sent us a great email over the holidays, "The Election Party You Missed", which grabbed our attention immediately;

The local DEC (Democratic Executive Committee) rented the Executive Courthouse Center and along with the help of volunteers, put on the election night party which attracted about 350 people; including Republicans, Democrats, Independents., homeless people, about to be homeless people, very wealthy people, very very wealthy people with multiple homes they could lend to the homeless people, black, white, and yellow people--maybe a few red ones too--old, young, and all in between------it was spectacular; great band (The Coffee Beans), good eats and drinks---------we blew the roof off------wished you'd have known; or maybe you did and just couldn't make it?????

P.S. just became aware of your site; so answered your question about where the party was------sorry over 7 weeks late!

Hmmm, we don't remember seeing that party covered in our local paper.

Have y'all finished gigglin yet?

That's Ok, Miss Nancy, just keep us on the mailin list and let us know what's happening.

*SNARK ALERT*
We hear that sales of tickets to the Treasure Coast Wine Festival next week, benefiting IR Medical Center and the VNA, are a bit sluggish. Don't blame it on the economy. Let's just ask, what happens when you take a great concept and turn it into a semi private, beachie, charity event? It becomes exclusionary and as of January 20th, that is no longer fashionable.

Thursday, January 29th, Mr. Eliot Kleinberg, the author of "Weird Florida", will be speaking at the Emerson Center. This event starts at 7pm and the best part is that it's FREE!

FIRST WEEK IN FEB. - BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!

Monday, February 2nd, Poetry Slam in Vero! Sound interesting? We thought so too. Here's the details and a link to the new Cafe 1901. We love anything goin down in downtown, so we'll be curious to check out somethin new.

http://perfectedpenpoetry.com/

http://www.cafe1901.com/

Tuesday, February 3rd, The Vero Beach Book Center welcomes back our favorite Florida hero SERGE! Ok, how 'bout Serge's alter ego, our favorite, Mr. Tim Dorsey? Y'all know we love us some Tim Dorsey! In fact, here's a picture of Miss Vero attending a previous event for Mr. Dorsey at the Vero Beach Book Center, can y'all spot us? http://www.timdorsey.com/vero%2006.jpg

http://www.timdorsey.com/home.html

http://theverobeachbookcenter.com/

After getting our paws on a new Tim Dorsey book, by the end of the week we'll be in the mood for a little Florida road trip and what could be better than the 2009 Floridiana Festival?
http://www.hulahula.biz/2009floridianafestival.html

Miss Vero has waited all year for what promises to be a fun event, but we'll have to rush back on Sunday, because on February 8th at The Club House Bar and Grill, located at 4000 Atlantic Blvd, THERE WILL BE DRAG QUEENS!

Got that? All of it? Good, we guess we'll be seeing y'all around then...

BUZZ, BUZZ, BUZZED

Good mornin kids, or for all of y'all that have a nine to five schedule - good afternoon! Now we don't know if any of y'all have picked up on this, but Miss Vero has been sicker than a dog, since just past Thanksgiving and we have had very little energy to do our regular cavortin and carryin on. Thank goodness this all came to an end last night when we were so graciously invited to the home of a prominent and very important artist and his lovely wife- a brilliant designer. Who knew that such fabulous people could reside right here in little ole Vero? But of course Miss Vero is teasin, we all know that there are many facinatin and artistic people in town. One of the reasons they choose to live here is for the peace and quiet and dadgum, we sure do have a lot of that!

When we last logged in with y'all we had a little burst of energy on Friday afternoon and we decide to get ourselves over to the Epicenter of Cool - Undertow. And speaking of celebrities lookin for peace and quiet, just who do y'all suppose was there? Miami Herald columnist and used to be funny writer - Mr. Carl Hiaasen. He was there with his teeny, tiny Mrs. and we can't imagine that they were there to eat because, they are probably the skinniest people we have ever laid eyes on. Ain't no fried chicken in the Hiaasen house, we can tell y'all that for sure. And no, Miss Vero did not speak to him again, not that we didn't have the opportunity, we were still probably not up to feelin like our ole vinegar veined self at that point.

We're still mad at Mr. Hiaasen for playin that elitist golf game at that resource drainin, private club, Quail Valley. We talked about our encounter at the Costa back in June. Maybe someday we'll get over it, we know Mr. Hiaasen's not holdin his breath.

So perhaps we'll just mosey on over to Lake Wales on Friday, to see our favorite Florida author Mr. Tim Dorsey. He'll be at the Lake Wales Public library, all friendly and accesible at 6:30 pm.
http://www.timdorsey.com/tour.html
And his new book is comin out on January 27th! Can't wait. Y'all know he'll be coming to Vero and of course, Miss Vero will make a day of it, cause we love Mr. Tim Dorsey and we are on his mailin list - so there, Mr. Hiaasen!

Hissy fit complete. Time for a cocktail!

BLACK AND BLUE FRIDAY

Why y'all, why? Who started this crazy idea of waiting in line at all hours of the morning, just to get a flat screen TV for $399, that honestly, nobody really needs? This is the age of internet and when people are willing to let us shop in the comfort of our homes and then deliver our purchases to our front door, why would any sane person even think about going out and dealing with the marketing crack known as "Black Friday"? Miss Vero thinks y'all are fools for even considering the idea. Let us offer an alternative for your holiday shopping needs:

A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Tim Dorsey for sendin us that email!

And of course, for your shopping convenience, y'all can get anything at Amazon.com just by clickin through that little box on the right. Stay at home, save gas, be civilized, pour yourselves a cocktail and shop a way, on your own time schedule! It's the 21st century hunnies! Gotta love that technology!

MAD ABOUT MICCO

Our Friend, Pete Harris 1947-2007

Miss Vero will admit that we are more than a little late to the party on this item, but after siftin through some stuff we are madder than a wet hen to read about these people:
http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/mar/18/neighbors-pleased-illegal-micco-bar-finally-closed/

That damn bar has been there forever and who in the H.E. double hockey sticks do these people think they are? Bojo's is akin to the statue of liberty in Micco...

"Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Sure it was like an Old Man bar, but it had character. Pete Harris was set to breath some life into it before the double hurricanes hit in 2004 and then, like everybody else at that time, it was slow going. Pete had even told Miss Vero that Florida serial killer, Aileen Wournos had lived for a couple months in the apartment downstairs. We can't find anything online to document that claim, but we sure do believe Pete.

Pete Harris was an old drinkin buddy of Miss Vero's and we enjoyed many cocktails (although Pete was a beer drinker) and Florida stories together. He passed away all too soon and his fabulous web site seems to have gone down, but y'all can still get his CD's offa CD Baby.

Pete has the best cover of the song "Mainline Florida", which y'all might remember from Eric Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevard album. Pete was a collaborator and friend of George Terry, who wrote "Mainline Florida" as well as introducing Clapton to Bob Marley's work, resulting in the recording of "I shot the Sheriff". Mr. Clapton explains that story exactly in his autobiography

So there's a little Florida music history for y'all.

A few years back when Miss Vero was thoroughly taken in by a Tim Dorsey novel and tellin Pete about it, he surprised Miss Vero by suggestin we take a ride one day. We ended up at one of Surge Storms' favorite haunts - the Coca Beach Pier tiki bar and drank the afternoon away!
http://www.visitflorida.com/articles/city-profile-cocoa-beach

http://timdorsey.com/roadkill.html

So here's a belated toast to Pete and all the good times he gave to so many.

Peace and Love Pete.

WRITE IT OFF

PACK UP YOUR BOOKS AND BE ON YOUR WAY!

And don't let the screen door hit you on the behind, sugar. Now y'all know kids, Miss Vero is heartbroken to hear the news that the Vero Beach Book Festival will not be happening this year. We just love to see some of our favorite authors in person, especially that cutey-pie serial killer creator, Mr. Tim Dorsey!
http://timdorsey.com/home.html

But, yes hunnies, we're afraid it's true:
http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/may/24/30gtbook-festival-postponed-until-at-least-until/

What a paltry piece of information this article has given us and even sadder is the fact that not one comment was posted to it. Miss Vero has sent an email to the writer to request a follow up. HA! We will not be surprised to be ignored.

Last time we checked the Book Festival website, they had at least 50 named volunteers and many authors already committed for 2008.
http://vbbf.orbitsys.net/about_committee.aspx

In fact Miss Vero ran across the the blog of Key West author, Mr. Michael Haskins, who talks about being offered some compensation from other festivals, but would have to bunk it with a buddy in Vero. Don't worry about that any more Mr. Haskins. Miss Vero sure hopes that we are not the one breakin the news to y'all.
http://chasinthewind.blogspot.com/2008/05/book-signing-tour-troubles-thanks-to.html

NO BANKIE, NO BOOKIES?

Miss Vero, as always, notices the little things like the big sponsor of the Book Festival being the Indian River National Bank, which is now The Royal Bank of Canada or somethin. They call themselves RBC and nowhere on their local website do they mention Canada, but here it is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Bank_of_Canada

Now as y'all may recall Miss Vero certainly has nothin against Canada, as we ourselves, threaten to retreat there often!
http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/2008/02/24/75-threatening-to-move-to-canada/

However, Mr. Andy Biendorf, former Prez of IRNB, has certainly got his hands full with that PR mess, what with customers scurryin off left and right and some key staff too. Miss Vero noticed the lovely Miss Alice Gaskill has defected to Riverside National, a bank that Miss Vero has never particularly liked, but may reconsider now that Miss Gaskill is in. (Miss Vero remembers many of the officers at the IRNB, but they will certainly not remember Miss Vero).
http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/may/22/riverside-bank-names-gaskill-development-post/

SO WHAT IS THE STORY?

What do y'all think kids? Did the big money sponsor drop out and now we're all made to suffer? Why is it that Vero Beach cannot get their collective rear ends in gear on these matters? The Book Festival was one event that had the ability to unite everyone- beachies and service class alike, is that why it's failin? It sure did pump some life into downtown. For a minute there Vero Beach was gaining a respectable reputation in the literary world. Even as recent as last Thursday, the Book Festival was still listed on the American Booksellers website:
http://news.bookweb.org/mediaguide/672.html

And why, oh why, is Miss Vero even botherin to ask these silly questions, when we could be doin what we do best - mixin up a martini and forgettin the whole damn thang. We must! If-in we think too much our fool head would explode, so excuse me y'all while I go find some olives.

TRAIN -ING OURSELVES

Did ya ever ride a train? All of y'all that has their head in the gutter can pull it out right now, because Miss Vero is posing a serious question about a serious subject. We're talking about a real train, with a dining car, a lounge stocked with alkeeholic beverages and a sleeping compartment. The kind of train that one would see in an old movie like "Some Like it Hot". Miss Vero has much experience with the trains of old and continues to be a patron of the train system today. Miss Vero enjoys loadin her ride onto that auto train in Sanford and snuggling into her compartment, waking up in DC the next morning. Unlike the the rail system in Europe and other such civilized places, train travel is undervalued in this country. A few years back Florida voters said yes to high speed rail, only to change their fool minds four years later.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_High_Speed_Rail

Just think kids, wouldn't it be fun to hop on and get the heck outa town? You can bet your high priced petrol sucking hummer that Miss Vero would be the first to ride and make a party out of it to boot! Yes, we are all for a train to somewhere, anywhere, fast or slow, that is why we were astonished to see this subject favored in a recent PJ op-ed .

http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/may/07/put-study-on-fast-track/

What is disheartening to Miss Vero (although not surprising) are some of the dimwitted comments that follow the article. Oh well, we'll just have to go on imagining a monorail down the center of I-95 or a train station in the thriving metropolis of downtown Vero Beach. Ever been to Winter Park, Florida? How cool would Vero be if we replicated that neighborhood?
As Miss Vero's Granmamie used to say "Expect nuthin child and ya never be disappointed".
In this way, our town has never disappointed.

If comedy and serial killers are something that naturally go together in your thinking (as it does in ours), check out Tim Dorsey's train tale "Stingray Shuffle".

http://www.timdorsey.com/stingray.html

As mentioned in our May 7th blog, Miss Vero shifted her allegiance from Mr. Hiaasen to Mr. Dorsey, which has been validated by the fact that Mr. Dorsey is accessible and politely corresponded with Miss Vero (MWAH! to you Mr. Dorsey). Mr. Hiaasen is only reached via his agent or an unnamed Miami Herald editor, which only further proves our point that he has become a Vero Beach elitist.

Miss Vero sincerely hopes that this idea of train travel will pick up steam, so to speak, and discussed this idea while visiting with an uber fabulous friend this weekend- who by the way will be leaving soon to attend the Cannes Film Festival! (Difficult to imagine the ultra liberal chic residing in Indian River county, isn't it kids?) Anyhoo, this fabu -friend tell us the story of a "green train" powered by bio-fuel that will spread love and joy with a series of concerts along the way. It will start out on the west coast - natch - and continue to whistle stop its way all over the country, right up to New England. Guess what state it isn't scheduled for? that's right children, Floriduh.

THE DECISION IS IN ON HORSE RACING

Wow, after an eye opening editorial by Miss Bonnie Erbe in Saturday's PJ,

http://www.montereyherald.com/opinion/ci_9191525

(Notice how we have to link to The Monterey Herald, since the article is no where to be found on the sassen, frassen, confound it, TCpalm website. Deep breath, enjoy the Pacific Coastline logo, imagine you are there, ahhhhh.) and an equally eye opening article in this week's TIME,

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1738503,00.html

Miss Vero has decided -
Mmm, horse racing is bad m'kay?

Miss Vero will continue to relate to earlier blogs, so pay attention kids.
Now it's time to rev up the blender, Miss Vero believes a batch of Margarita's are in order!
And, yes Mr.Lemmon, it is nice to be a Monday through Friday blogger without a time deadline.

THE WRITE STUFF, HIAASEN, DORSEY AND WOODS, OH MY

WHAT THE FUDGE HAPPENED TO CARL HIAASEN?

Did any of y'all go see him last night at the Vero Beach Book Center? Miss Vero had a previous engagement and could not attend Mr. Hiaasen's book sale. Miss Vero already has several of Mr. Hiaasen's signed works in her collection and was on the Miami Herald writer's fan wagon for the last twenty years - until now. Yesterday's New York Times sums it up:

"Quail Valley, the Florida golf club where Carl Hiaasen plays, looks like the kind of place where some of the creeps who populate his novels — the environmental despoilers, glad-handing lobbyists and politicians on the take — might belong."
Read the full article if y'all are so inclined:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/06/books/06hiaasen.html?scp=2&sq=carl+hiaasen&st=nyt

Mr.Hiaasen moves to Vero, takes up golf and what? Looses his mind apparently. Oh, Carl, may we call you Carl? Miss Vero is deeply distraught over your descent into the dark world and wishes you would come to your fool senses.

Miss Vero supposes that we will have to continue to get our giggle from another favorite Florida boy, Tim Dorsey.
Mr. Dorsey is very well versed in Florida history, yet his knowledge of quirky dive motels and drinking establishments are what entices Miss Vero. We are especially intimate with many of the locations (Oh how we miss The Big Bamboo!)

http://bigbamboolounge.com/

And so for now, we'll continue to receive some pleasure from Mr. Dorsey. In fact, here's a photo of Mr. Dorsey's fans at the Vero Beach Book Center, if you look real close, you can see Miss Vero! http://www.timdorsey.com/vero%2006.jpg

Mr. Hiaasen has a case of trading old fans for new. This reminds Miss Vero of the story of another writer, Rick Bragg. Now while Mr. Bragg was not from Florida, he was once the Miami Bureau Chief of the New York Times, received the Pulitzer Prize for journalism and wrote well received autobiographical books, that melted many a lady pining for a good Southern man. When the bachelor Mr. Bragg came to town, every seat was filled with squirmin ladies cooing over his drawl and twang. They listened eagerly as he told his tale of his beloved mama and his inability to find the "right one". Long story short - a scandal ensued at the Times, Mr. Bragg was accused of plagiarism and hightailed it back home to Aleebamie. To heal his wounds, Miss Vero speculates, Mr. Bragg married some Tennessee chickadee, which provided further damage to Mr. Bragg's career by alienating his fan base. Miss Vero witnessed three ladies get up and walk right out of Mr. Bragg's speech at the Vero Book Festival when he announced his nuptials!

SO LONG MR. WOODS.
Speaking of weddings and Vero related authors, Miss Vero noticed Mr. Stuart Woods' recent marriage in the New York Times:
No mention of Mr. Woods' former Orchid Beach residence. Miss Vero wonders why Mr. Woods left Vero for bigger and better places. Perhaps the new Mrs. Woods persuaded him? We think we might like her.

Miss Vero must skidaddle quickly today children, we are meetin a lady friend for lunch at the club over looking a well manicured, resource draining, water sucking golf course. Remember children, if you want to start a revolution, it is better to do it from the inside out. Perhaps this is also Mr. Hiaasen's plan. We can only hope.
