CHECKIN IN ON VETERAN'S DAY

Miss Vero has had a special request to give y'all an update on what's happening this week. So, if y'all are ready to keep up here's the rundown:

Tonight, Wednesday November 11th, an opening party for a new downtown restaurant, The Green House Cafe. Just across the street from the main post office, from 5:30 - 7:30. Check out this website IndianRiverCulture.com for more details. Actually just check out this website anyway, it's very clean and cool and we like that.

Thursday, November 12th, again from 5:30 - 7:30 at Ti Amo Sempre 1517 S. Ocean Drive,Vero Venture Networking (formerly Martini Network), bar-hopping with a purpose, no cover, no membership, no fees...Just Networking. We hear that last month's meeting was a success and we think this group may be fun, after all, we have to love an organization that gives a purpose to "bar-hopping".

Friday, November, 13th (FRIDAY THE 13TH!!??), oh well, not to be one who is superstitious, we are looking forward to the "Fest-of-Ale and Fine Cuisine" and the 6th annual Firefighter's Chili Cookoff, Saturday, November 14th, at Pointe West. Click here for all the details:

Also Saturday, November 14th, at Holman Stadium there's sumthin called the "Celebrity vs. Government" softball game. Details have been sketchy on this event, but it might be worth it to see a few ole boys, like Rhett Palmer and Mr. Joe Baird running around the bases or chasin' a foul ball. Here's what we know:http://everydreamhasaprice.com/

Now of course, y'all know Miss Vero saves the best for last. Saturday night, 7pm, if y'all would like to attend one of the most FABULOUS shows in all of Vero here's the scoop. There will be a special dinner and show with Miss Kelli Randell, Ruler of all Fabulocity and Drag Queen Extrodinare! And if y'all would like to get in on the fun, not to mention some amazing food, call this number, ask for Curt at Culinary Capers and tell him Miss Vero sent you. (772) 562-9194.

Go 'head call, we dare ya. Be real brave and ask to sit our table.

MWAH!
P. S. Hunnies, y'all know we got us a new camera. Comin' soon, pictures of all, some or maybe a few of the above events, depending on our alkeehaul intake and gin soaked brain remembering to bring along said camera.

I'LL TAKE "PEOPLE I KNOW ON JEOPARDY" FOR A 1000, ALEX!

As y'all know by now, Miss Vero is ancient and has met just about everyone worth drinkin with in Vero and in many other parts of this little ole planet. So, of course we had friends who were on the popular game show Jeopardy out in Cali-forny (We especially loved sharing their life time supply of Klondike Bars!). But who would figure that of the three known Veroites that have been on the stage with Alex Trebeck, that Miss Vero would be having dinner with two of them this evening? Can y'all guess who?

WE STAND TO BE CORRECTED
On Saint Patrick's Day, we asked if there were any other Irish Pubs in Vero Beach and we were reminded that Bobby McCarthy from the legendary "Bobby's", was indeed Irish enough to have his establishment qualify as an Irish Pub. So there.

STUFF WE MISSED
Last weekend- The St. Pat's Parade on Ocean Drive and the Pelican Island Wildlife Festival in Sebastian:
http://www.myhometownnews.net/index.php?tim=&cat_id=News~Indian+River+County
We are currently workin out just how to get a calendar widget for events posted to the site. So of course, we're lookin for any big, strong, strappin, tech boys out there, who would be willin to help.

KEVIN SAWNICK AND PETER O'BRYAN

We made another comment a while back, that City Council member, Mr. Kevin Sawnick ,was out and about in the public and quite accessible to his constituents (a quality that we certainly admire in a politician). We did receive an email from County Commissioner, Mr. Peter O'Bryan on this subject.

Miss Vero,

Please see the notice below. I have been meeting with the public on a monthly basis since I took office in November 2006. It is normally held at the Vero Highlands community center on Highlands Drive, but for March the residents of Indian River Club invited us to their clubhouse.

Cheers,
Peter

Wow, Miss Vero appreciates the correction and apologies to to Mr. O'Bryan for the oversight of not getting the notification out on time for the March meeting. Perhaps his office would be so kind as to continue to send Mr. O'Bryan's meet and greet schedule, so that we may share it with y'all. And, we especially like that he signed it "Cheers"!

As for the technologically unchallenged, Mr. Kevin Sawnick, we know we can always find him on twitter:

Well have to get goin kids, Viv is MIA again this morning (um, afternoon to most of y'all and we're gonna hafta go hunt her down. Poor thing, she tries so hard to keep up with Miss Vero, but this is not a job for the faint of heart (or liver).

POINTE WEST POLO

Click on this link for the entire Pointe West season schedule.

Polo season starts this weekend at Pointe West! The type of tailgating we understand, Miss Vero and friends loves to watch the ponies while wearing silly hats and drinking champagne, this is one sport that makes sense.

Did we mention that there's also an outdoor family movie on Saturday night?Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and if y'all need a snack, there's a concession stand during the movie.

Everything you need for a great weekend.

Did we also mention that we absolutely love Pointe West for being so friendly and accessible. We do.

HAPPY HANUKKAH!

As y'all know by now Miss Vero loves to celebrate, all holidays are equal in our book. So we just finished up with our first two nights of Hanukkah and now it's time to replenish our supplies.

Honestly, the one thing we truly like about this time of year are the house parties. Holidays seem to have everybody invitin everybody else over to their house for a party. We just wish folks wouldn't limit it to this time of year because this is one tradition that we enjoy. Good thing we got all that nasty seasonal sickness out of the way, because we have need our strength to attend four house parties in four days! Hey, we are not complaining.

Of course we did manage to put on our Ray Bans and get out into the sunshine on Saturday to attend Winter Fest at Pointe West. And what a lovely event it was! Over at the VIP tent we spotted Mr. Wesley Davis and we were told that we had just missed some of the other commissioners that attended. It would have been easy to miss them, because there was a crowd of over 10,000 people there. Yes, that's right TEN THOUSAND! Now wouldn't y'all think that a gatherin of that many joyous, happy festive folks, at an event open to the public, with resources from the county be covered by the PJ? Wouldn't ya? And especially since the Press Journal was a "sponsor" of the event, wouldn't you think they would have some pictures of the happy children frolicking in the snow? Yes, SNOW! We're sure that some staff photographer would have much better photos that the ones Miss Vero snapped with a cellphone. Just sayin...

All right, so here's what Miss Vero would like for Christmas (or Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa or just for the heck of it) - A NEWSPAPER THAT COVERS VERO BEACH! Yes, we know we're yelling, it's intentional.

Now Max Newport loves to talk about Vero history and legal stuff (we'd bet the farm that he's gonna have a field day on January 7th , when both Ira Hatch and Damian Gilliams have court dates) and that suits us fine. While LDouglas reminds us that we should be more environmental aware. But yours truly would just like to pick up a paper or click online and find out what the heck is goin on around this town, from folks who report and not opinionate. Is that too much to ask? It is Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Whatever, after all.

Santa Baby are y'all listening?

ALL DRESSED UP AND NOWHERE TO GO

And we were so looking forward to downtown Friday! Another chance to see and hear our new favorite local band "Sleepin Dogz":
http://sleepindogz.com/

Who doesn't like to see downtown Vero buzzing, y'all just never know who you might run into. At least we got out last night, although it took a little while to get things goin, eventually it all came together.

After all our frettin about the hard times we're all facing, we thought it would be interesting to live large and go shopping for a $10 million dollar home on the beach. This economic crisis can't last forever! Our good friend Miss Barbara, who is a realtor with Thorpe Southeby's, invited us out to the open house of "Veromar" last evening.
http://www.thorpesir.com/index.cfm?method=PropertySearch.Detail&id=3123

Now, Miss Vero just doesn't have an extra ten mill in this months budget, but any of y'all that do can give Miss Barbara a call and we're sure she'll arrange a private tour of this fabulous property. And if y'all can't do that, at least check out her fabulous blog:
http://activerain.com/blogs/grandharbor

After our house shopping we dropped in on the Contemporaries at the Vero Beach Museum of Art and even though they had a pretty lively blues band, it was dullsville babe. We don't know why, but every time we attend a function there, we get a cold vibe.

So that the evening wasn't a total loss, of course we ended up at the Epicenter of cool - Undertow. Hanging with Miss Kitty and and the Zigmeister, we were having us a good ole time when - in walked a posse from the place we'd just ditched. Yup the "Contempt-oraries crew! Stick with Miss Vero and we'll show y'all where the party is.

We are hoping for nicer weather tomorrow to attend the Firefighters Chili Cook Off at Pointe West:
http://www.iaff2201.com/index.cfm?zone=/unionactive/view_article.cfm&HomeID=100390

Or the Good Ole Gifford Soul Food Feast:
http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/oct/24/good-ole-gifford-soul-food-served-up-02/

Or maybe both, because y'all know, the only thing we like better than a stiff cocktail is some fiery azz food!

TOMORROW'S NEWS TODAY!

Secret Squirrel strikes again!

Our very favorite correspondent -Secret Squirrel - just zapped us a photo of
the groundbreaking this morning at Pointe West!

Look at that! A politician shovelin' sumthin!

Anyhoo kids, we told y'all about the new medical center being built at Pointe West in our June 23rd post "All roads Point West" and we hear that later on this year, there will be another ground breakin for the shops and restaurants that will turn this community into Vero Beach's own "mini-Tradition"

Check it out:

http://www.pointewestflorida.com/Default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=231196&ssid=82042&vnf=1

Are we excited? Heck yeah.

Why? Because this is a perfect example of development done right.

Now, Miss Vero has never been too involved with the politics of it all, we just know what we like and we sure do like Pointe West.

Since this county growth issue seems to be the main topic of the year, what do y'all think?

ALL ROADS POINT WEST

Miss Vero is very excited, not to hear the news (we already have), but to finally see it in print:
http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/jun/22/30gtsr-60-widening-gets-boost/

We know that Karen and Chuck Mechling have worked like dogs to keep this little community progressing and maintaining it as a show place for Indian River County. Miss Vero loves that it is not gated, offers rentals, townhouses, beautiful villa homes and fabulous polo ground estates. We love the events like Screen on the Green, Winterfest, polo on Sunday afternoons (all free to residents and the public) and the very welcoming (nonexclusive) Club at Pointe West. And now it gets even better. Soon there will be a medical facility and later a town center with shops and restaurants.
http://www.pointewestflorida.com/Default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=231192&ssid=82038&vnf=1

Now, we know a lot of y'all nay saying no development types won't even entertain the thought of growth, but here's a prime example of some folks who have committed themselves to the community and have done a beautiful job. About seven or so years ago, Miss Vero attended an economic summit at the Vero Beach campus of IRCC. At a considerable expense, a man was hired by the county -we believe it was Bill Furst - who flat out told the local gov that growth was gonna happen and it was their responsibility and ours (the people of Indian River County) to decide not IF but HOW it would happen. He said things either "ratchet up" or " ratchet down", but one thing's for certain - nothin stays the same. That auditorium was packed, but it turns out a lot of people dismissed the advice, we sure are glad Chuck Mechling paid attention.

DOES RUSS LEMMON READ HIS OWN PAPER?

Miss Vero would just like to point out to y'all that Mr. Lemmon said yesterday:

"With the Indian River Medical Center east of the railroad tracks and most of the population growth taking place to the west, logic says we're asking for trouble if we don't build an overpass someday."

While the Pointe West article, in the same day, quoted:

"The new medical building, right inside the Pointe West entrance, will be closer than Indian River Medical Center, which should be a big help for the assisted-living facilities in the area, Pointe West President Chuck Mechling says. You won't have to drive all the way to the hospital in the future"

Yes, we understand that they are not building an entire hospital, but it would be so nice if-in everybody could be on the same page, when in fact, they actually are on the same page.

Remember last week when the Secret Squirrel told us that the candidates for county commission failed to answer the economic development question? Maybe that's the only thing that doesn't change.

Time for Miss Vero to stop thinking so much and mix up a martini, or maybe a manhattan - for a change.

MWAH!

P.S. Here's a toast to the fabulous Mr. George Carlin and whoever put those billboards up near the Fort Pierce exit of I-95 (See June 11th post - "George Bless you")
